The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) has released a joint expert consensus document with the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) on the role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in cardiac sarcoid detection and therapy monitoring.
We are very excited to present this Joint SNMMI-ASNC Expert Consensus Document on the Role of PET/CT in Cardiac Sarcoid Detection and Therapy Monitoring. The recognition that randomized prospective trials are not available for this rare disease and are unlikely to be conducted has prompted the Cardiovascular Council of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) to assemble a multidisplinary team of experts not only in imaging but also in clinical cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology, heart failure, and systemic sarcoidosis to develop this comprehensive consensus statement. This document is unique in providing not only a consensus on the current indications for performing FDG PET/CT for the detection of cardiac sarcoidosis and monitoring therapy and recommendations on image acquisition, processing, and interpretation, but also discusses the current considerations in the management and treatment of cardiac sarcoidosis. The importance of assessing for extracardiac sarcoidosis is also emphasized in this document, with a focus on the interpretation of extracardiac PET/CT in the context of cardiac sarcoidosis evaluation. This document will be useful not only for imaging specialists but also for clinicians evaluating and managing patients with suspected or known cardiac sarcoidosis.-Panithaya Chareonthaitawee, M.D., Lead Author on GuidelineView New Guideline
