Since 2003, more than 70 ASNC members have participated in the society's Leadership Development Program (LDP). Many have gone on to serve as ASNC officers,
participate in planning Scientific Sessions and other educational programs, help shape and execute ASNC's advocacy platform, and craft guidelines and standards used by clinicians worldwide.A graduate of the 2014 ASNC-LDP class, Viviany Taqueti, MD, has already begun making her mark on ASNC and the specialty of nuclear cardiology. She led the writing committee for the new consensus statement, “Myocardial Perfusion Imaging in Women for the Evaluation of Stable Ischemic Heart Disease—State-of-the-Evidences and Clinical Recommendations.” The paper has received positive feedback from cardiologists for its multi-modality approach to imaging in women and practical guidance.
“The Leadership Development Program was a terrific experience,” says Dr. Taqueti, who is an associate physician in the Noninvasive Cardiovascular Imaging Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston. “It introduced me early on to a community of experts and mentors who have been pivotal in my development as a cardiologist and cardiovascular imaging expert. These interactions take on particular importance as we begin to tackle the modern challenge of how to leverage cardiovascular imaging to improve patient outcomes.”
The value of ASNC-LDP is that it delivers on many fronts, adds CEO Kathy Flood. “Of course, it gives our early career members opportunities to grow their leadership skills and interact with nuclear cardiology's legends, but it also creates a rich pipeline of ASNC members who are prepared to take on challenging and important projects, sometimes very early in their careers.”
Dr. Taqueti's contributions to ASNC are an example, she says. “Dr. Taqueti is invaluable on the Membership Committee,” says Ms. Flood. “She recently gave the keynote address at an educational event hosted by the Florida ACC chapter and ASNC. She made the most of the LDP and hit the ground running throughout the Society.”
Applicants who are accepted into the Leadership Development Program engage in an intense and rewarding three-year journey of learning through participation and mentorship. The experience begins immediately after selection, when they are invited to join ASNC committees, educational planning teams and writing groups. In those and other settings, LDP participants work side by side with ASNC's current and upcoming leadership.
“There's no substitute for front-line exposure to the Society's mission and strategic plan, plus direct access to the volunteer and staff team,” says Prem Soman, MD, FASNC who is ASNC's president-elect and an LDP graduate who now chairs the program. “It's the ideal training for becoming an ASNC leader yourself.”
