Dr. Divakaran will apply the award's $50,000 grant to his research project, “Skeletal Muscle Perfusion and Energetics in Patients with Symptomatic Peripheral Artery Disease.”
Dr. Divakaran is an associate physician in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Cardiovascular Imaging Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. His mentor is Marcelo F. Di Carli, MD, MASNC.
The IANC Research Fellowship Award was established in 2018 to encourage and support careers in nuclear cardiology research while growing the science of cardiac imaging and advancing the specialty. The award is presented annually to an early-career investigator who proposes research that will add important new information to the cardiac imaging literature.
“The IANC Research Fellowship Award Committee reviewed excellent applications. It is exciting to see interest in research aimed at expanding the use of nuclear techniques in the detection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases,” said Committee Chair Raymond Russell, MD, PhD, MASNC. “Dr. Divakaran's proposal is focused on increasing our understanding of the changes in blood flow and metabolism in skeletal muscle in peripheral arterial disease. These studies build upon the expertise in cardiac imaging at Brigham and Women's Hospital and will address a serious disease associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality.”
Dr. Divakaran will be honored at the ASNC2020 Virtual Scientific Session and Exposition. The award presentation will be part of the “Presidents' Session” on Friday, Sept. 25.
ASNC2020 will also feature 2019 IANC Research Fellowship Awardee Senthil Selvaraj, MD, presenting preliminary results from his project “Comparison of the Short-Term Effect of Dietary Carbohydrate Restriction Versus Exogenous Ketone Supplementation on Myocardial Glucose Suppression and Timing to Achieve a State of Ketosis Using Serial Imaging on a State-of-the Art Total-Body PET System.”
Krishna Patel, MD, MSc, who received the first IANC Research Fellowship Award, will present in the session titled, “Stable Ischemic Heart Disease: Black, White or Gray Scale” and moderate the social media session “Steering Your Tweetanic: Basics and Advanced.”
