Reactor Update: Mo-99 Supply Returning to Normal
Over the past weeks, ASNC has kept members apprised on an unplanned shutdown of the high flux reactor (HFR) in Petten, Netherlands, that resulted in Mo-99 supply challenges. This week, the Nuclear Medicine Europe (NMEu) Emergency Response Team announced a solution for restoring the HFR's cooling function had been selected and was pending approval by the Dutch nuclear safety authority.
The anticipated HFR restart date is March 17.
In the interim, other reactors have been producing Mo-99. The Belgian BR2 reactor resumed operations February 12, the Polish MARIA reactor added operational days and the IRE reactor is slated to begin production of highly enriched uranium this week. NMEu says these efforts mean Mo-99 supply should return to normal within a week.
