The VII Iberoamerican Congress of Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac Imaging, held April 14-16, 2016, in Havana, provided an important opportunity for physicians and other healthcare providers to learn about new advances in Nuclear Cardiology and in cardiac imaging. Organized in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and supported by ASNC and other cardiology societies, the Congress was organized by Conference Chair Amalia Peix, MD, PhD, and members of the Organizing, Program and Scientific Committees: Erick Alexanderson, MD, FASNC, Daniel Berman, MD, MASNC, Ernest V. Garcia, MD, PhD, MASNC, Teresa Massardo, MD, Fernando Mut, MD, Diana Paez, MD, and Leslee Shaw, MD, PhD, MASNC.
The conference's major themes included—
· The role of Nuclear Cardiology in special populations
· Ischemia-guided therapy
· Multimodality imaging in coronary artery disease
· Cardiac PET and hybrid imaging
· SPECT and PET: new developments in hardware and software
· Strategies for dose reduction in Nuclear Cardiology
· Echocardiography and new applications in cardiac imaging
· Quality assurance
Highlighting these themes were two keynote lectures—“Nuclear Cardiology Facing Emergent Imaging Modalities” by Marcelo Di Carli, MD, FASNC, and “The Right Test for the Right Patient” by Robert Hendel, MD, MASNC—as well as a comprehensive scientific summary presentation by Dr. Massardo on the last day of the conference.
The excitement of Cuba—and specifically at the Congress—was “almost palpable,” said Dr. Hendel. “It was a thrill to be part of the conference, because of the enthusiasm the Cuban people have for both science and art, and because of the world-class hospitality of our Cuban colleagues. They made a lasting impression on all who attended.”
In addition to reviewing the latest research results affecting Nuclear Cardiology, Congress attendees considered opportunities to improve the care of cardiac patients in Latin America and worldwide. Physician leaders from Argentina (Nestor Vita, MD), Chile (Dr. Massardo), Colombia (Claudia Gutierrez, MD), Cuba (Dr. Peix), Mexico (Dr. Alexanderson), United States (Dr. Garcia) and Uruguay (Dr. Mut) convened to discuss the growth of the next conference, which will be held in Colombia in 2018.
