ASNC imaging guidelines/SNMMI procedure standard for positron emission tomography (PET) nuclear cardiology procedures

"ASNC will periodically define new guidelines or update prior guidelines for nuclear cardiology practice, independently or in collaboration with other organizations, to help advance the science of cardiovascular nuclear medicine and to improve the quality of patient care.  ASNC recognizes that the safe and effective use of diagnostic cardiovascular nuclear imaging requires specific training, skills, and techniques.  In the 2016 September issue of the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, an updated joint ASNC imaging guidelines and Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) procedure standard for positron emission tomography (PET) nuclear cardiology procedures is being published addressing progress in the areas of  PET myocardial perfusion and metabolism clinical imaging.  Specific updates include 1) assessment and reporting of PET absolute hyperemic blood flow and flow reserve, and 2) expanded applications of PET glucose metabolism for cardiac device infections and sarcoidosis.  The updated cardiac PET imaging guidelines is an educational tool designed to assist practitioners in providing appropriate care for patients.  The guidelines document is the outcome of close collaboration between ASNC and SNMMI and among experts in the field from both organizations, which has been subjected to extensive review, requiring the approval of several committees from both organizations, and ultimately the endorsement of both ASNC and SNMMI Board of Directors."
